At least 38 dead in Italy coach crash

At least 38 people have died in a coach crash on a flyover in southern Italy – the worst road accident in the country for many years. The coach, reportedly carrying around 50 people, including children, hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling 30m down a steep slope near the town of Avellino, in the Campania region. At least 38 people have died in a coach crash on a flyover in southern Italy – the worst road accident in the country for many years.

The coach, reportedly carrying around 50 people, including children, hit several vehicles before smashing through a barrier and toppling 30m down a steep slope near the town of Avellino, in the Campania region.

At least a further 10 people are reported to have been injured, some of them seriously, in the crash on the evening of Sunday 28 July 2013.

The coach occupants were said to be returning to Naples following a pilgrimage.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

The Naples-Bari motorway was closed to traffic because of the accident.
