The combination of innovative safety features in a new quick hitch device for hydraulic excavators has earned a silver award for 4104 Klac Industrie in the INTERMAT Innovation Awards 2012.

The new Klac + quick hitch device comes in three models for machines of 8/9tonnes to 24/25tonnes. It has been designed to open up new markets for the company, which has specialised in quick coupling systems for 11 years but had previously focused on smaller machines.

Safety is a particularly important feature in the larger machines and Klac aimed to develop a simple and compact system that would maintain the breakout force and be 100% secure so that it stays locked.

Klac + brings together four key innovations: Klac Serenity, Klac Control, Klac Select and Klac Protect.

The Klac Serenity locking system is designed to prevent the loss of the attachment if the engagement system fails. The system operates mechanically rather than relying on hydraulic energy. It goes into action in case of failure of the locking force if one or both of the locking springs breaks. The locking plate is then being locked into the secured position by two safety catches.

Klac Control is an alarmed system whose sensors check the locking and safety systems. It is equipped with a buzzer and lights. Sensors enable it to detect incomplete locking, any failure in the Klac Serenity system or failure in the Klac Control system itself.

Use of Klac Select is designed to avoid the risk of human error in checking that oversized attachments are not fitted to a machine. The system only accepts accessories with a weight and capacity compatible with the carrier. The fail-safe device features connections whose geometry takes account of machine capacity to prevent too large an attachment being fitted. It features male and female parts, sized so that the connectors on buckets that are too big will be unable to fit the machine’s quick-hitch system.

The fourth element of Klac + is Klac protect, which is designed to ensure the safety of the hydraulic hose and electrical cable by keeping them retracted and covered when not needed.

Topcon’s RTP-300 machine, launched at INTERMAT, is no slouch in providing fast and exact road surface data for construction companies and highway authority consultants. “What is typically used is a car [fitted with road surface profiling technology] that needs to keep stopping when scanning a road surface profile. On larger highways, this has meant the road needs to be closed,” said Achiel Sturm, Topcon’s marketing manager.

A new range of safety-focused automatic quick couplers will be launched by Geith at INTERMAT, specifically for mini excavators. The new QC35/40 hydraulic coupler is designed for use on mini-excavators from two- to four tonnes, giving the operator a fully automatic, safe change-over system without having to leave the cab. A patented double pin locking system ensures that the coupler retains the attachment in a safe position even if there is a loss of power, said the firm.
