Kenya highway projects now underway

Work on two major highway projects are now commencing in Kenya. One project will improve the road connection between Kenya’s capital Nairobi, with its premier port of Mombasa. The other project will see the upgrade of the road link joining Kenya with neighbouring Uganda. Work on the Mombasa to Nairobi highway is starting on a 42km stretch between Mombasa and Marikani. Work on the Mombasa to Nairobi highway is starting on a 42km stretch between Mombasa and Marikani. This work is costing some US$213.4 million and the improved route will feature two lanes in either direction when the work is complete. Meanwhile funding worth $253 million has been secured to pay for the upgrade of the Kenya to Uganda road link, with the improvements also delivering two lanes in either direction. This finance package will be supplied by the African Development Bank (AfDB). Upgrading the 118km Kapchorwa-Suam-Kitale Road will improve transport and trade between Kenya and Uganda and is expected to take until 2021 to complete.

The work on this project as well as the Nairobi to Mombasa route forms part of a wider plan to improve road transport routes across East Africa. For landlocked Uganda, the road upgrade programme will allow better access to Kenya’s port of Mombasa.
