A driver in Kiev used a rather unusual technique to avoid a traffic jam. The driver reversed at high speed for several hundred metres along a busy dual carriageway, despite oncoming traffic. Almost miraculously, other vehicles managed to avoid crashing into the car. Once the vehicle reached an intersection, the driver was able to turn around and head off in another direction. This driving technique is not recommended.

On Aug 1st 2017, it was 10 years since the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis collapsed. The bridge had been classified as structurally deficient and was undergoing repair at the time. However the repairs focussed on the decking rather than the structure, with the additional weight of the extra asphalt layers and the construction machinery parked adding to the total load and contributing to the collapse.
Construction work on the US$3.5 billion project to widen a stretch of the I-5 highway in California will commence at the end of 2017. The project may well include a tunnel stretch under the Westfield UTC to meet environmental requirements. Once the work is complete, the newly widened highway stretch will feature increased capacity and this is expected to cut congestion and reduce journey times at peak periods. A group of cycling enthusiasts recently spent five days riding 'Penny Farthing' type historic bicycles from French capital paris to UK capital London. The hardy group braved inclement weather and serious discomfort on their solid-tyred bicycles, not to mention risking life and limb. The bicycles date from the 1880s and are notoriously hard to mount and stop.
