Italian manufacturers of construction equipment are benefiting from good export sales at present. While sales of off-highway construction machines in Italy are weak at present, the manufacturers are seeing steady overseas sales. The manufacuring association, 2539 Unacea, says that over the first half of 2012, construction equipment sales in the Italian market decreased by 32% to 3,172 units, compared to the same period of 2011. Sales of earthmoving machines fell 31.1% to 3,539 units, sales of road machines dropped 49% to 73 units and sales of concrete machines fell 34.6% to 100 machines.

Giampiero Biglia, vicepresident of Unacea said, “Many contractors are not renewing their fleet, which is now largely obsolete. This situation is damaging the whole system’s competitiveness in terms of construction sites’ efficiency, work safety and environmental safeguard.”

On the other hand, construction equipment exports are growing. According to the Italian Institute of Statistics' data, elaborated by Unacea, over the first four months of 2012 the exports of the division exceeded €786 million, an increase of 18% compared to the same period of 2011.
