Italian crash rate reducing

An in-depth analysis of crash statistics from Italy shows that road safety is improving in the country, albeit slowly. The Italian National Statistiscs Institute has published the yearly report (2014) covering road crashes. The data reveals that in 2014 there were 1777,031 crashes involving injuries. An in-depth analysis of crash statistics from Italy shows that road safety is improving in the country, albeit slowly. The Italian National Statistiscs Institute has published the yearly report (2014) covering road crashes. The data reveals that in 2014 there were 1777,031 crashes involving injuries. This represents a drop of 2.5% compared with the figures for 2013. In all 3,381 people were killed in road crashes in Italy during 2014, a drop of 0.6% compared with 2013. The number of serious injuries from road crashes also dropped 2.7% compared with the figures for 2013, to 251,147 in 2014.

The most serious crashes were on non-urban roads, with an average of 4.63 killed/100 crashes. On urban roads the average was 1.13 killed/100 crashes, while on major highways the average was 3.14 killed/100 crashes.

The number of road deaths on highways fell 10.6% compared with the data for 2013 and by 3.8% for non-urban roads. However the number for those killed in crashes on urban roads rose by 5.4%.

    Provisional figures available from the UK’s Department for Transport reveal a drop in road fatalities in 2012 compared with the previous year. There were 1,754 fatalities in 2012, an 8% drop from 2011 according to the DfT information.     Ireland’s road safety levels are improving, but perhaps more slowly than is desirable. In 2018 there were 142 road deaths in Ireland. A significant improvement over the last 20 years where compared with the 458 road deaths in the country seen in 1998. Of note is that for 2014-2018, 25% of all fatal crashes and 20% of crashes involving serious injuries occurred during the 22.00-06.00 period when traffic volumes are typically low.     Germany recorded an increase in the numbers of traffic fatalities in 2014. Data revealed by the German federal statistical office, Destatis, shows that 3,368 people were killed in crashes on German roads in 2014. Provisional figures show that this was an increase of 29 deaths (0.9% compared) with 2013. In all, however, it was the second-lowest number of people killed in the course of a year since 1950.
