The 920 American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) is hosting an event to highlights the US Interstate system. This will be held on June 29th at the National Press Club in US capital Washington, DC. The event marks the 60th anniversary of the law that kicked-off the funding and construction of the nation’s 47,000-mile Interstate Highway System.

The event will also explore what the Interstate Highway System of the future should look like to ensure that transportation in the US remains fast, efficient and effective.

On June 29th 1956, then president Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation into law creating the federal Highway Trust Fund and the federal-aid highway programme. Work on the US Interstate system commenced afterwards and this network of highways has boosted transportation efficiency and been a key factor in the country’s economic growth. However, funding for maintenance, repairs and expansion is severely limited due to the poor financial state of the Highway Trust Fund. And there is concern in the construction and transportation sectors as to the future of the US Interstate network, an issue ARTBA is keen to highlight.
