INTERMAT launch for Perkins Stage IV solution

Perkins used INTERMAT to reveal its six-cylinder solution to meet US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emissions regulations due in 2014. Top of the six-cylinder range is the twin turbo, 1206F-E70TTA – a 7litre engine capable of producing up to 225kW. Key to the engine’s cleanliness is a revised emissions module that now adds an SCR system to the existing DOC and DPF elements, but without increasing its physical size.

David Clayton: re-engineered system for Tier 4

Top of the six-cylinder range is the twin turbo, 1206F-E70TTA – a 7litre engine capable of producing up to 225kW.

Key to the engine’s cleanliness is a revised emissions module that now adds an SCR system to the existing DOC and DPF elements, but without increasing its physical size.

“We’ve re-engineered the active system from the Stage IIIb 1206 engine to become a passive system with diesel exhaust fluid for Stage IV,” explained Perkins’ Tier 4 product marketing manager Daniel Clayton. “This new emissions module can also be remote-mounted by up to 1.8m from the engine, assisting installation for OEMs. And removing the active regeneration element has meant the module is also 30kg lighter than before.”

Perkins added that the service-free module is said to be good for 8-10,000hours before needing inspection.

“The passive exhaust emissions system delivers up to 8% better fuel economy, but with the addition of 3% diesel exhaust fluid, customers can expect a net fluid consumption that is 5% lower than the Stage IIIb version,” added Clayton.

Greater fuel efficiency, improved digging performance and revised styling are among the changes to be found on Volvo’s latest D-series wheeled excavators. The four-model EW range spans 14-21tonnes and benefits from a new engine, cab, hydraulics, substructure, boom, arm and controls. There is more power with D-series, from stage IIIB engines that use V-ACT technology. The four cylinder (EW140D) and six cylinder engines produce high torque at low engine speeds, said Volvo, giving rise to low fuel consumption.
