The novel rectangular tunnelling system developed by Shanghai Urban Construction Tunnel Engineering has been used successfully on part of the Henan Zhengzhou Weisi Road tunnel project.

The equipment has been used to drive a rectangular section receiving shaft underneath Zhongzhou Road. When complete, the Zhengzhou Weisi Road tunnel will run underneath Zhongzhou Road, which is in Zhengdong New District. Zhongzhou Road forms the boundary of the central urban area.

The use of this novel pipe jacking machine was required on the project to solve issues with regard to existing underground utilities. The rectangular section pipe jacking machine Zhongzhou I measures 7.5m by 10.4m and is the subject of several patents.

The machine has been developed as the firm believes this rectangular section equipment offers benefits for installing underpasses in urban locations, for freeways, underground garages and other infrastructure projects.
