India's rural road upgrades

The Indian Highways Ministry has plans to construct new roads in under-developed areas of the country. A budget of some US$3.19 billion is envisaged for the work required over the coming five year period.

The Indian Highways Ministry has plans to construct new roads in under-developed areas of the country. A budget of some US$3.19 billion is envisaged for the work required over the coming five year period. Proposed work includes the construction of some 1,000km of roads in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. These roads are likely to feature two lanes. India’s Border Road Organisation (BRO) is also planning to invest some $607.5 million in better road networks in border areas. An allocation of $141 million will be needed to pay for the 103 road upgrades in Jammu and Kashmir.

    A major programme of road development is planned for the Indian states of Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Odisha and West Bengal.     India’s federal government has sanctioned the construction or upgrading of 2,500km of national level roads in Telangana state.
