India road crashes see fatalities increase

India’s road fatality rate saw an increase during 2016 compared with the previous year. There were around 150,000 road deaths reported in India during 2016, an increase of 3.2% from the previous year. The number of road crashes did fall however by 4.1% to 480,000. Uttar Pradesh State saw the biggest increase in road crash deaths, which grew by 12.8% in 2016. Tamil Nadu State saw an 11.4% increase in road deaths while Maharashtra State saw an increase in road fatalities of 8.6% in 2016.

There were around 150,000 road deaths reported in India during 2016, an increase of 3.2% from the previous year. The number of road crashes did fall however by 4.1% to 480,000. Tamil Nadu State saw an 11.4% increase in road deaths while Maharashtra State saw an increase in road fatalities of 8.6% in 2016. Two wheelers accounted for 33.8% of India’s road deaths.

    Oman’s roads have shown a gain in safety during the first four months of 2016. Crashes dropped 32% for the first four months of this year, compared with the same period during 2015. However road deaths during the first four months of 2016 increased by 1.4% to 210. In all there were 1,413 crashes in the first four months of 2016, while injuries were reduced by 22.8% to 903.

  • US road safety concern for 2017

    The US is making only slow progress with regard to road safety. During 2017 there were 40,100 road deaths, according to the National Safety Council. This is the second year that deaths from motor vehicle crashes have topped 40,000. There has been a slight improvement for 2017 from 2016 with road deaths dropping 1%. However 2016 was a poor year for road safety, with a 6% gain in road deaths over 2015. This means that the figures for 2017 represent a 6% increase in road deaths from two years before in 2015.
