Italian company 4848 Ihimer has scooped a prestigious prize in the INTERMAT 2012 Innovation Awards.

Its Carry 105 Electric Power eco mini dumper secured the firm, based near Siena, in Tuscany, the award for Sustainable Development.

Ihimer will receive its accolade along with 11 other prize winners during a special ceremony organised by award organisers, the National Federation of Public Works of France (FNTP), to be held in Paris on during INTERMAT 2012 on 16 April.

On Ihimer’s success, the firm’s vice president Paolo Venturi said: “I am immensely proud that our company has been chosen to receive this international recognition. Ihimer has confirmed its International standing among the leading companies able to offer the market reliable and innovative products that are also respectful of the environment and the operator, reducing or even eliminating gaseous emissions and minimising noise levels.”

Ihimer said its win was due to the “impressive” features of the Carry 105 which, it said, offered the ideal way of transporting materials in enclosed spaces such as greenhouses, schools, hospitals and areas with reduced ventilation.

With an overall width of 690 mm, Ihimer claim the Carry 105 can enter previously inaccessible spaces inside buildings and negotiate standard width doors and structures to gain access to hard-to-reach interior gardens. The complete absence of exhaust fumes, combined with very low noise levels protect the operator's health and safety and respects the environment. This also makes it ideal for use in locations such as town centres and beaches.

A selector on the Carry 105 provides a choice between Fast and Slow operating modes, assisting with manoeuvrability while minimising power consumption.

The mini dumper’s use of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries (widely used in electric vehicles) makes it possible to achieve high charge capacity, a high number of charge-discharge cycles, full power also with low charge levels, modest weight and zero maintenance requirements compared to traditional lead acid batteries. Operation is controlled by an electronic battery management system (BMS) complete with display for diagnostics, continuous monitoring of functions and residual charge information.

ZF has chosen a pair of radial hydraulic motors for use in its compact single-speed hydrostatic transmission, the 2HC85, which has been developed for compact wheeled loaders up to 100kW and 10.5tonnes operating weight. For high-torque start-up, the transmission sends oil to both motors and demands maximum stroke to travel from 0-16kph, before isolating one motor and then using 100% oil flow through the remaining motor to propel the machine to its maximum travel speed of 42kph. ZF said radial motors afford a
