Hyundai’s hydraulic hybrid offers 20% fuel savings

Hyundai Heavy Industries is showcasing a hydraulic hybrid machine at bauma. The R220-LC Hi-POSS is a 22tonne-crawler excavator with a system that allows brake energy to be used for other functions. 236 Hyundai Heavy Industries is showcasing a hydraulic hybrid machine at 688 Bauma.

The R220-LC Hi-POSS is a 22tonne-crawler excavator with a system that allows brake energy to be used for other functions. Hi-POSS stands for Hyundai intelligent power optimal sharing and energy saving.

“This is the most novel thing we have,” said Hyundai product engineer Joachim Van de Perre. “With a conventional excavator, when you brake, the energy heats the hydraulic oil. Here we use the energy to perform another task with the machine: cross-function regeneration.”

The result is improved fuel efficiency. Tests have shown savings of at least 20%, said Van der Perre.

With an electric hybrid, the brake energy can only be re-directed to the slewing ring. Whereas with the hydraulic hybrid, it can be used for several functions, or it can be stored in an accumulator.

The concept model is still under test. “We have to adjust the controllability and speed settings,” said Van der Perre. “The system offers us the possibility of adjusting for different applications and different operator habits.”

Determining the configurations for different application will require hours of further testing with many different operators to get the optimum energy distribution, said Van de Perre.
