5739 Hyundai Engineering and Construction (Hyundai E&C) has developed an information system that offers motorists real-time information on weather, roads and traffic congestion. Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Motor also collaborated in the development of the system, for which five individual patents are said to have been secured by Hyundai Group.

With the system, data can be sent through the WAVE telecom technology via message signs on roads or directly to cars, while information from weather reports, vehicle sensors and related road infrastructure are gathered to offer notifications regarding traffic congestion and road conditions. The Hyundai E&C system is being earmarked for the Yeongdong Expressway, which is being built to link the cities of Wonju (in North Central South Korea, 140km east of Seoul) and Gwangju in the South West of the country. The highway is scheduled to open at the end of 2016.

A new technology developed by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland provides drivers with warnings of black ice on the roads. This automatic detection system will warn a driver in advance that a road is dangerous due to the presence of ice. According to VTT, this uses a novel, real-time method of obtaining information on road surface friction and employs data collected from the car’s in-built sensors. This compares the speeds of the drive shafts and axles in an array of driving conditions, with an al
