Concern has been raised in France over a worrying increase in road fatalities during January 2011, with the death rate on the countries roads reaching 320, according to early reports. This compares to the 290 recorded for January 2010 and represents a 33% increase over the January 2009 figure. The data is provisional, and final figures have yet to be released.
Fatal road accident levels have been slowly reducing in France over the last few years due to a combination of safety measures from the French government and increased police enforcement of driving laws.
The French government is aiming to reduce the country’s annual road fatality rate to under 3,000 by 2012.
Controversial measures allowing drivers to remove points from their licences have been put into action, which some say could reduce some of the benefits to road safety seen in the country in recent years.
