French road deaths fall

Road deaths in France were down 7.6% in August 2012 compared to the same month in 2011. In total, 342 people were killed in road accidents. During the first eight months of 2012, road deaths were down 8.9% compared to the same period of 2011, despite a 3.6% increase during the month of July. Between September 2011 and August 2012, the number of deaths was 3,728. As of 1 November, 2012, it will be compulsory to have a breathalyser in every vehicle. Road deaths in France were down 7.6% in August 2012 compared to the same month in 2011.

In total, 342 people were killed in road accidents. During the first eight months of 2012, road deaths were down 8.9% compared to the same period of 2011, despite a 3.6% increase during the month of July. Between September 2011 and August 2012, the number of deaths was 3,728.

As of 1 November, 2012, it will be compulsory to have a breathalyser in every vehicle. This move comes in addition to the 3,900 speed cameras which are already installed and the recent addition of cameras which monitor the average speed of drivers on motorways.

    This new analysis has been published by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). According to the ETSC data, 2014 showed the lowest annual reduction in EU road deaths since 2001. In all 25,845 people were killed in road crashes in the 28 nations of the EU during 2014. This represented a decrease of just 0.6% compared to 2013. EU member states now need to cut deaths by almost 8% each year until 2020 to meet the target set in 2010 to halve deaths within a decade.
