One of Florida’s Interstate stretches has the highest rate of road crashes in the US, according to a newly available report. Interstate 4 runs through Tampa, Orlando and Daytona Beach and has been identified as having the highest ratio of road fatalities to distance for any road section in the US. The report was compiled by Teletrac Navman and highlights the section that runs past Orlando as being particularly dangerous. According to the report, Interstate 4 has 0.78 deaths/km (1.25/mile) putting it into first place for the top 25 most dangerous highway stretches in the US. Interstate 4 is currently the subject of a major upgrade project, which will hopefully reduce the fatality rate. However it is of note that the design of the highway itself is not the cause of the majority of the crashes. Florida’s road safety record is poor for the US, with a comparatively high rate of drink driving being a key problem. Distracted driving and speeding are also recognised as major problems for road safety in Florida.

Concern is being expressed in the US by the National Safety Council (NSC), which believes the country’s road safety is making no progress. According to the NSC, the current trends suggest that the US will see no reductions in road deaths for the third consecutive year. Its preliminary estimates suggest that the US will again have a road fatality rate of around 40,000 for 2018. There were around 18,720 road fatalities for the first six months of 2018, according to the NSC’s data, compared with around 18,770

Figures now available from the International Road Traffic Accident Database (IRTAD) highlight the risk of travelling by road in some countries. Not all countries compile accurate data from police sources and in many, a high percentage of road traffic crashes go unreported to the authorities. But the data from nations that do compile such information highlights counties where road risks are high and action needs to be taken.
