Eye-catching southern Italian bridge explosion (VIDEO)

The expertise of Nitrex Explosives Engineering were utilised recently for this eye-catching controlled explosion bringing down the Viadotto Ponte Autostrade Pecorone di Lauria (Lauria Junction viaduct) in Lauria, Potenza, southern Italy. Ice and salt had degraded the viaduct, necessitating a rebuild. A new viaduct will better withstand the snowy mountain climate of the Potenza region.

    The Italian construction machinery builders association, UNACEA, reports a resurgence in demand for equipment during 2017. According to UNACEA’s latest report, the first six months of 2017 have seen 5,109 machines sold in the Italian market, an increase of 6% compared to last year.     The Oklahoma Department of Transport has sent the Grand River Bridge to the bottom of the Grand River in a massive five-second controlled detonation.

    The bridge, officially called the Richard D. Newkirk Bridge, was built in 1949 and named after an engineer and long-time employee of the Oklahoma DoT. Newkirk died in 1998 at the age of 80 at his cabin on Fort Gibson Lake, close to the bridge.

    Newkirk began his career as a highway labourer working for 35 cents an hour. By the time he retired in 1987, he had served as Division 1 district engineer for more than 13 years.

    Autovía del Pirineo has secured €182 million for the construction and operation of several sections of the A21 motorway in Spain’s northern Navarre region. Autovía del Pirineo is a subsidiary of Iridium Concesiones de Infraestructuras and a member of the ACS Group. International law firm Watson Farley & Williams said that it had advised a syndicate of banks and other European institutional funders on the procurement of senior debt facilities worth €182 million for Pirineo.
