The 4x4 version of the B30D is for special applications
From 1240 Bell Equipment comes a special version of its B30 truck in the shape of a 4x4 version of the B30D. Introduced as part of the firm’s VersaTruck programme, the 4x4 version of the B30D has been developed for a range of applications such as use in underground tunnel construction and underground mining, or quarrying. The shorter rear chassis and single rear axle means that the truck is able to manoeuvre in tighter spaces than the conventional B30 machine, suiting it to applications such as underground operations, a market segment where Bell has a considerable experience. The 240kW 2796 Mercedes engine meets emissions requirements and is said to be well suited to use in underground duties, while additional after-treatment systems and special electrics can be fitted if required to meet the needs of a specific tunnelling (or mining) application. This 27tonne capacity truck has an unladen weight of 17.25tonnes and shares features with the standard B30D such as its engine and transmission, although the 17m3 dump body is specially built for this model. To ensure parts commonality with the rest of the Bell range, the rear axle comes from the B40. The front tyres are the standard size units for the B30 while the rear tyres are standard for the B40, again ensuring parts commonality for fleet users.

The VersaTruck concept is built along modular lines and customers are able to choose from a number of Bell ADT features to best suit their own requirements. Also included in Bell Equipment's extensive list of VersaTruck solutions are ejector trucks, fire trucks, water tankers, lube trucks, flat deck trucks, hooklift trucks, container trucks, concrete trucks, waste handlers, waste compactors and even an underground concrete mixer.

Clinton Wissekerke heads the Bell Application Equipment (BAE) division that developed the VersaTruck models and he explained, "Providing the same payload and engine performance as our standard B30D, the 4x4 option offers a tighter turning circle and shorter dimensions compared to our traditional 6x6 ADT with their optimised off-road capability. It therefore suits customers needing improved manoeuvrability, but still needing the higher flexibility of an articulated truck compared to rigid chassis alternatives on the market. These customers may also reduce tyre costs - a major portion of the operating cost of an ADT - simply through reduced tyre scuffing associated with the third axle."

Performance, safety, fuel efficiency and ease of operation are the same as for the standard ADT range. The VersaTruck models also have the same features, including on-board weighing, keyless ignition, HillAssist, Bin Tip Prevention, Auto Park Application (APA), standard Turbo Spin Protection and the satellite fleet management system.
