A €188.5 million contract has been awarded in Norway for the construction of a 12.5km road and tunnel stretch. The local contractor, Hæhre Entreprenør, will carry out the work for a stretch of the E6 highway between Ranheim and Sveberg.

This section of the E6 runs to the east of Trondheim and the contractor’s package of works is for the design and construction of a 1.7km tunnel and 10.8km of road. The construction work is expected to take two years to complete.

The road is being widened to increase capacity and boost safety and the package of works includes building a second Væretunnelen tunnel, parallel to the existing tube.

In addition, contractor Contur has won a contract to build the Hommelvik Bridge Southbound Lane for the Trondheim-Værnes stretch of the E6. This section of the road also lies to the east of Trondheim and the €15.4 million contract was awarded by developer Nye Veier, with the project due for completion in December 2025. The 228m Hommelvik Bridge will have steel beams supporting a concrete deck, featuring two traffic lanes and four spans.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian Road Administration, Statens Vegvesen, is carrying out pilot trials with drones for inspection work of rock faces in cuttings made for highways. Statens Vegvesen is using the drones to test their efficiency, in comparison with conventional methods for rock inspection such as using access equipment. The aim is to increase safety for personnel, by removing geologists from potentially dangerous areas with a risk of rockfalls and close to live traffic. The pilot trials are being carried out on high traffic sections of the E6 and E18 close to capital Oslo.
