Turkish contractor 5252 Enka and its joint venture partner 4138 Bechtel have won the Best Global Project Award from US magazine Engineering News Record (ENR) for the Kosovo Route 7 highway project. The privately owned firm ENKA and Bechtel won an award in ENR’s Global Best Competition 2013 for the Project of the Year in the category for Roads and Highways around the world. Projects in several categories competed in the awards on factors such as innovation and overcoming global challenges, implementation of safety procedures, construction quality and workmanship and function and aesthetic quality of the design. The winners were selected by an independent jury of industry leaders in design and construction. ENKA will receive its award during the ENR 2013 Global Construction Summit which will be held on June 6-7, 2013 in New York.

The new highway connects Kosovo’s capital Pristina with neighbouring Albania. The route is of enormous economic and political importance to the tiny, landlocked Balkan country Kosovo which fought hard to win its independence in a bitter war. The new highway connects through to the large Albanian port of Durrës on the Adriatic as well as to Albania’s capital Tirana. Kosovo and Albania share ethnic and political ties and the highway gives Kosovo an economic lifeline that will be crucial for its future. The new highway faced many challenges during its construction as the geology of the route was difficult in some areas, while the contractors also had to cope with the aftermath of the recent war. The project also took close regard of sensitive environmental issues, taking care to protect water sources along the route. This new highway will also help reduce risk for Kosovo’s drivers as it replaces a twisting route through mountainous areas that has proven extremely dangerous and particularly during winter months.

The Kosovo highway project was the focus of a key project report in 3260 World Highways in 2012 following a visit to the site:

This project has also been recognised by the 2462 IRF and won an award in its GRAA programme:

And this project has been covered extensively in World Highways:

While its importance has also been well documented internationally and ENR’s award is in fact the only the latest in several recognitions for the project:
