Ecuador's highway strategy

Ecuador is planning a major highway building programme to improve the country’s economy and infrastructure.

Ecuador is planning a major highway building programme to improve the country’s economy and infrastructure. The four year plan is expected to cost some US$5 billion and was announced by the country’s president Rafael Correa, when he made his first official speech of 2011. The aim of the plan is to build some 1,300km of highways to connect major towns and cities.

    Algeria’s Public Works Ministry has announced it plans to build new expressway connections to the country’s East-West highway. These expressways will link the Algeria’s ports to the East-West highway, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.     A 162km stretch of Ecuador’s highway route 40 is to be upgraded, improving the road’s safety and capacity. The section of highway being improved includes the stretch that links the town of Santa Elena, which lies on the Pacific Coast, with the city of Guayaquil, on the Guayas River. The contract now includes work to 30km more of the highway than was originally planned. The contractor Verdu is to carry out the PPP deal, which is expected to be worth US$231 million over the 20-year concession period.
