Digital sites will take centre stage at the forthcoming SaMoTer exhibition in Verona, Italy, with a focus on Machinery 4.0 and digital control technologies.

With only five months to go, the 31st edition of SaMoTer, from 3-7 May, will be held alongside Asphaltic. Confirmed exhibitors at SaMoTer include Ammann, Bobcat, Bomag, Cifa, Dieci, Doosan, Hidromek, Kato Imer, Kobelco, Komatsu, Magni, Marini, Merlo, Sany, Sermac, Sunward, Takeuchi, Venieri, Wacker Neuson, Wirtgen, Yanmar and Zoomlion.

In the forefront of digital site presentations will be CGT, the long-standing Caterpillar dealer in Italy.

Within the SaMoTer Lab demo area, the Cantiere Digitale-Digital Construction Site will be set up - a full-scale automated and integrated construction site where Machinery 4.0 and digital control technologies will be shown at work several times a day for the duration of the trade fair. It will also be broadcast live on the screens inside SaMoTer Lab in Hall 12 and at the entrance to the Exhibition Centre.

Cantiere Digitale-Digital Construction Site will reflect the sector’s drive towards sustainability. The Digital Construction Site will display the advantages of connectivity and the use of data in terms of efficiency, thanks to work-cycle optimisation, lower energy consumption, higher productivity through real-time monitoring systems, safety through remote control of work in hazardous
environments and predictive trouble-shooting.

"Digitisation and de-carbonisation are the keywords characterising the new format, not to mention economic sustainability, safety and training,” said Sara Quotti Tubi, manager for the area within the venue. “SaMoTer Lab is open to all companies in the construction sector keen to bring innovation and content along to the trade fair and promote discussion."

The term Industry 4.0 was first coined by the German government in 2011 to highlight what is called the fourth industrial revolution that is driven by the digitisation of manufacturing. As such, according to the European Industry Construction Federation (FIEC), the main goal of Construction 4.0 is to create a digital construction site that monitors progress throughout the lifecycle of a project by using different technologies.

Among the technologies under the umbrella of Construction 4.0 are iBIM (integrated building information modelling), augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, drones, IoT (Internet of Things) and Big Data (the processing of large amounts of data that is used for predictive modelling).

Maximising a machine’s uptime, allocation of resources the most efficient way, completing projects on schedule and ensuring the quality of results are nowadays major factors that decide whether a company can run its business successfully or not. This is amplified by the fact that the labor-intensive construction sector is affected by a global shortage of skilled workforce like few other industries and has to meet far-reaching requirements for quality, documentation, and sustainability.
