Desert link for China

Work is now underway in China on a new 157.5km highway link, being constructed through one of the country's desert areas.

Work is now underway in China on a new 157.5km highway link, being constructed through one of the country's desert areas. The project is being carried out in Gansu Province and is the first highway project in this area.

The work is due for completion in 2014 and is expected to cost US$1.12 billion. When complete the highway will connect Shuangta in Wuwei city's Gulang County with Yingpanshui in Baiyin city's Jingtai County.

Meanwhile a new 204km highway is being built that will connect Zhangjiakoi with Chengde. This four-lane highway will cost $3.29 billion and has been approved by the 3415 Hebei Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

    India is embarking upon a series of large road upgrade projects. In all 16 roads will be improved in 11 states, with a total length of 622km.     Vietnam is seeing significant expansion of its highway network at present, with another three major projects now moving forward and much of the financial backing coming from other Asian nations such as South Korea and Japan. A feasibility study is being carried out for the 94km Nghi Son-Bai Vot expressway and this should be complete by October 2010. The project is expected to cost US$1.04 billion and the expressway will have either six or four lanes, based on Transport Engineering Design's study.
