Work is now underway in China on a new 157.5km highway link, being constructed through one of the country's desert areas. The project is being carried out in Gansu Province and is the first highway project in this area.

The work is due for completion in 2014 and is expected to cost US$1.12 billion. When complete the highway will connect Shuangta in Wuwei city's Gulang County with Yingpanshui in Baiyin city's Jingtai County.

Meanwhile a new 204km highway is being built that will connect Zhangjiakoi with Chengde. This four-lane highway will cost $3.29 billion and has been approved by the 3415 Hebei Provincial Development and Reform Commission.
