2698 Delcan, a multi-disciplinary engineering, planning, management and technology firm, has been awarded Concrete Canada’s 2012 Structural Design Innovation Award for their work on the Whitemans Creek Bridge near Brantford, Ontario.

Completed in 2011, Delcan, as Engineer of Record, worked collaboratively with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to complete the replacement of the Bridge. By using what were described as accelerated bridge construction techniques, the Bridge was constructed in only seven weeks, as opposed to several months using conventional construction methods.

Measures to enable rapid construction, such as use of ultra-high performance concrete and fibre reinforced polymer reinforcing, were used as a result of the site conditions, constraints of the surrounding terrain and residential properties. This approach is said to have resulted in a faster, safer and more durable bridge, minimising disruptions to traffic and local residents.

“Delcan is honoured to have worked with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation on this innovative project,” said Joanne McCall, vice president of Delcan’s structures division. “We congratulate everyone involved and look forward to collaborating on future projects in the region.”

The annual Ontario Concrete Awards Banquet honours the vision and creativity of owners, architects, engineers, contractors and concrete producers that design and construct some of the most creative projects in Ontario, and have made concrete their construction material of choice.
