Czech Republic cuts road spending

News that the Czech Republic’s Transport Ministry will halt work to just four road building projects has come as a relief to several major contractors. The industry had feared much tougher budget savings would be imposed, resulting in road projects in double figures being suspended or cancelled. The projects being halted will be a section of the I/9 road near Ceska Lipa; the Ostrava-Opava stretch of the I/11 road and two connections to the D1 highway in the Ostrava region.

Also in the Czech Republic, a study has shown that the new D8 highway will benefit the local economy by improving connections with the country's neighbours while reducing annual road-related fatalities. Around three lives will be saved/year and 30 injuries will be eliminated/year should construction of the final 16km section of the highway in the Ceske Stredohori mountain range be completed.

In addition, planning permission has been given for a 3.1km section of the R52 road linking Pohorelice with Ivana, a road that will eventually link Brno with Vienna, capital of neighbouring Austria. Construction is expected to start with a bypass around Mikulov.
