Contract for Romanian highway construction signed

In Romania the road authorities have signed a deal for the construction of a 22km stretch of highway in a contract worth €91 million. The Portuguese contractor Monte Adriano will construct the section linking Nadlac with Pecica. Romania has pledged to improve and expand its highway network with the construction of new links, and much of the funding for its highway plans has been provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

In Romania the road authorities have signed a deal for the construction of a 22km stretch of highway in a contract worth €91 million.

The Portuguese contractor 2753 Monte Adriano will construct the section linking Nadlac with Pecica.

Romania has pledged to improve and expand its highway network with the construction of new links, and much of the funding for its highway plans has been provided by the 1166 European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the 1054 European Investment Bank (EIB).

Meanwhile, the country’s new Basarab-Constanta highway stretch and the Constanta ring road will be partially open for traffic in July 2011. The highway project is being carried out by 1324 Astaldi and Max Boegl and is expected to cost €211 million.

Bidding is also healthy for other key road projects including modernisation of the DN18 national road linking Baia Mare with Iacobeni, a 200km project worth €194.65 million (excluding VAT) where bidders include Shapir of Israel; 945 Strabag of Austria; 1570 Aktor and Mochlos of Greece; and a consortium formed by Spedition UMB and Tehnostrade. Shapir, Aktor and Strabag placed bids to upgrade the stretch between Baia Mare and Sighetul Marmatiei and the section from Sighetul Marmatiei–Moisei. The three companies also placed bids for the upgrade of the third segment of the road between Moisei and Iacobeni.

    A €305.7 million loan is being provided to Romania through the European Commission. This will be used to to fund the construction of the Cernavoda-Constanta section of the Sun Highway. The loan will not have to be repaid as it will fall under the Cohesion Fund. The Romania retroactively requested the EU to fund the Highway after contracting with the European Investment Bank in 2005 for a loan to cover construction costs.

    In Romania plans are in hand for a new ring road around the city of Satu Mare. The 19.5km ring road will reduce congestion in the city, which lies in the north of the country. The tender process has been opened by the Romanian roads authority, CNADNR, with bids being received until the 10th November 2014. Including VAT, the project will cost in the region of €184.7 million to construct and is expected to take four years to complete, with financing being delivered by the Operational Programme for Transport.

    Italian consortium Nogara Mare is reportedly the favoured bidder in the contract worth around US$2.52billion for the construction and management of the new Nogara-Mare Adriatico motorway in Italy. Nogara Mare was created by Confederazione delle Autostrade, the company promoting the project, with 23% of its ownership belonging to the Italian group Astaldi.
