Colombia is planning a massive investment in infrastructure up to 2021. The country's Ministry of Transport has revealed plans to spend US$56.17 billion on an array of infrastructure projects over the next 10 years. A key component of this will be an increase in Colombia's total distance of two lane highways from 1,100km - 5,200km. The major road projects include Buenaventura-Bogota-Cucuta, Llanos Orientales-Pacifico, Troncal de Occidente and Troncal del Magdalena. However, a road project between Acandi and Unquia has been put on hold. The road forms part of a wider project to connect the power grids of Colombia and Panama but has been delayed over concerns that indigenous communities in Choco were not properly consulted. Panamanian firm ETESA puts the total cost of the 614km power transmission line between both countries at $500 million, including the road building component. The power line was planned to be ready in 2012 but it is not clear how much of a delay will result due to the need for a new consultation process.
