The crawler excavator operator in this incident had a close call when the bridge being demolished collapsed unexpectedly. The accident happened in Belgium during the demolition of an old highway bridge.
Work is underway in the US state of Kansas on a demolition project intended to improve key highway connections. The Interstate 35 was closed in both northbound and southbound directions at the weekend to allow demolition work. Meanwhile lanes on 1-435 were also closed for the demolition work. The common pier for the I-35 and I-435 routes was removed using hydraulic excavators fitted with hydraulic worktools.
In Nepal a 159m long suspension bridge spanning the Trishuli River has collapsed, killing two and injuring 17 while five people are posted as missing. Meanwhile in neighbouring India, an old wooden bridge spanning the Rangit River has collapsed killing 32, injuring 70 and leaving 35 missing. A significant portion of those killed, injured or missing are Nepali speaking tea workers.
