The crawler excavator operator in this incident had a close call when the bridge being demolished collapsed unexpectedly. The accident happened in Belgium during the demolition of an old highway bridge.
The investigation into the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in the Italian city of Genoa is continuing. The failure of the bridge in August 2018 resulted in 43 fatalities. A central section of the structure collapsed and most of the deaths were of those crossing in vehicles at the time, although the deaths also included those hit by falling debris underneath. In the UK town of Luton, a contractor has been hard at work demolishing a car park. Situated in the centre of this large town, the car park had to be removed as it had reached the end of its working life. But the tight space of the urban working environment meant that the contractor had to be extremely careful not to damage surrounding buildings or inconvenience business, traffic or commuters. Long reach excavators with demolition attachments were used by the firm.
Locals turned out in large numbers to watch the demolition of a redundant bridge in West Virginia on the east coast of the US. The 65 year old bridge located near the town of Lilly was removed by a specialist demolition crew following careful preparations. The area now has a new bridge as the old steel cantilever truss structure was no longer able to cope with local traffic needs. The remains of the old bridge, one of the last cantilever steel structures in the state, are now being cut up for scrap.
