Upgrading work on China's Hohhot-Baotou highway is now underway in a project worth US$1.5 billion. The work is due for completion within 26 months and involves widening the existing four lane highway to eight lanes, in a bid to handle congestion at peak periods on this busy route. The improvement to the 217km stretch of highway will see its capacity increase by over 100% to nearly 93,000 vehicles/day. The Hohhot-Baotou highway forms part of the Beijing-Tibet highway.
