Chinese firm awards sub-contract package in Sri Lanka

A Chinese contractor is awarding sub-contracting work in Sri Lanka on a number of key road projects in Jaffna.

A Chinese contractor is awarding sub-contracting work in Sri Lanka on a number of key road projects in Jaffna. The firm, 890 China Railway No 5 Engineering Group (CR5) has awarded a US$22 million package of works to 3238 Access Engineering (AEL). The project is for upgrades to three roads, with the work due for completion in late 2012. CR5 is the main contractor for the upgrade to the Jaffna-Kankasanthurai, Jaffna-Palali and Puththur-Meesalai roads.

The firm, Shangdong, is looking at purchasing the concessions for the Colombo-Katunayake expressway and the Colombo Outer Circular expressway in Sri Lanka. The two highways have a pricetag of around US$600 million. A substantial portion of the funding for the Colombo-Katunayake expressway, some $248.2 million, was provided by China’s Exim Bank while the remaining $45 million was provided by the Sri Lanka Government.
