In China, 80,000km of new roads are planned to be constructed in 2013 as part of a huge investment in new transport infrastructure. During 2012, 58,672km of roads, including 9,910 km of highways, were constructed in the country.
The authorities in China's Shanxi Province are investing heavily in highway expansion. By the end of 2012, the total highway/expressway network Shanxi Province will be some 5,000km. This will cost some US$15.85 billion for expressway construction during the year. A total of 23 expressway projects totalling 1,600km will be constructed during 2012. By the end of 2015, the total expressway distance in Shanxi Province should reach some 6,300km, from 4,000km in 2011.
The authorities in the Russian city of St Petersburg will spend some US$514.6 million on road construction and reconstruction during 2012. The city authorities will use public and private partnerships to push ahead with planned road infrastructure projects. Private investors will be invited to participate in construction of two highways with bridges across the Neva River, a highway with a bridge at the intersection of Fayansovaya and Zolnaya streets, and the Northern highway #7 connecting Arsenalnaya embank
China’s Guizhou Province is developing its transport infrastructure with a major programme of works being scheduled. Construction for six new highways is commencing during 2019, with the work being planned and managed by the Guizhou Provincial Transportation Department. These six highway sections will all feature at least two lanes in either direction, five of which will be for traffic speeds up to 80km/h.
The 162km Nayong to Qinglong highway however will be for speeds up to 100km/h, is costing over US$5.
With a deficit of US$58 billion in infrastructure, ranging from highways to ports and airports, Chile's priority should be urbanisation, according to Javier Hurtado, head of studies at national construction chamber CChC.
"Today, over 80% of Chileans live in cities. Urban areas are where a significant part of the economy and life happens. So if you want to make real improvements to quality of life, focus on urban areas," Hurtado said in an interview with BNamericas.
