In China, 80,000km of new roads are planned to be constructed in 2013 as part of a huge investment in new transport infrastructure. During 2012, 58,672km of roads, including 9,910 km of highways, were constructed in the country.
The government of Hunan Province, China plans to create more than 1,000kms of extra highway in the province as part of a US$27.32 billion (CNY 170bn) investment in 176 mostly infrastructure projects in 2013. The huge highway infrastructure expansion, which will see the construction of 37 new highways, will increase the 3,969km of province highway as of 2012 by more than 25%. Of the 37 highways, works on 14 of them are targeted to be wrapped up in 2013.
Regional roads in Russia look set for a revamp during 2015. Some US$6.64 billion will be spent on Russia’s regional roads, according to the Rador association. This compares against the $5.8 billion spent on repairs and revamping of Russia’s regional roads in 2014. The aim is to build and maintain some 1,620km of Russia’s regional roads in 2015, compared with 1,249km achieved in 2014. China's Ministry for Transport reveals that it beat its target for upgrading rural roads during 2009. Some 381,000km of rural roads were improved, beating the target of 300,000km by a considerable margin.
Official estimates suggest that 70% of Ukraine’s highways require capital repairs. Meanwhile, 50% of the country’s highways (80,000km) of highways are in a poor condition. Roads have been made worse by recent bad winter weather. According to Ukraine’s state body Ukravtodor, traffic volumes have also increased 5%/year for the last five years, making the problem worse.
