Cambodia’s crashes – cause for concern

A report from Cambodia’s General Commissariat of National Police gives cause for concern at country’s high rate of road crashes. Fatalities from road crashes in 2015 rose to 2,265, a climb of 5% compared to 2014. There were 9,775 people injured in road crashes in Cambodia in 2015, a drop of 4% compared with 2014. An accurate figure for the number of road crashes in 2015 has yet to be released by the General Commissariat of National Police but an estimate puts this at around 4,600, compared with the official

A report from Cambodia’s General Commissariat of National Police gives cause for concern at country’s high rate of road crashes. Fatalities from road crashes in 2015 rose to 2,265, a climb of 5% compared to 2014. There were 9,775 people injured in road crashes in Cambodia in 2015, a drop of 4% compared with 2014. An accurate figure for the number of road crashes in 2015 has yet to be released by the General Commissariat of National Police but an estimate puts this at around 4,600, compared with the official figure of 4,645 during 2014. In all, 7,575 vehicles were damaged in road crashes in Cambodia in 2015.

    Cambodia’s crashes continue to be a cause for concern. The country’s National Committee for Road Traffic Safety says that road deaths increased by 11% during the first nine months of 2017 compared with the same period in 2016. The area identified as haing the highest rates of road deaths were Kandal, Kampong Thom and Phnom Penh. On a more positive note though, serious injuries from crashes slightly compared the previous nine month period.

This follows a period of several years in which the casualty statistics have improved.     France has seen an increase in its road fatality rate during 2015. Official figures show that road casualties again increased during 2015, the second consecutive year that this has occurred. Road deaths increased by 2.3% over the figure for 2014 and reached 3,461 in 2015. This increased fatality rate is of note as for the 12 years previous to 2014, France’s road death rate had reduced.
