California redefines the term carpool

California is home to many weird and wonderful home-made vehicles, some more useful than other. But few can be as useful as the car pool table car which can do up to 160kph on the freeway. As shown by this – complete with all the double entendres you could wish for – the owner can drive to the beach, park up and proceed to play pool, which apparently attracts a lot of beach bunnies. http://www.msn.com/en-gb/video/watch/video/vi-AAaCRoj?ocid=OutNUK&from=OutNUK&FORM=BWVOLC A late model Chevrolet Mont

The car’s roof was cut off, the vehicle then chopped in half and thanks to some artful but careful welding, a pool table on car wheels was added to the rear of the assembly. An extension of the drivetrain back to the new rear wheels under the pool table and presto! A car-cum-pool table.

At the press of a button, hydraulic pads drop down from underneath the table section to raise the wheels off the ground and at the flick of a switch, the table itself is detached from the driver’s section of the vehicle, which can drive off several yards to leave the table on its levelling pads.

The basic idea is not necessarily new. Californians have for years been installing pool tables into modified car bodies for use in their homes. No engine though, just an unusual conversation piece.

Californians love their cars so the video comes with an assurance. Not one car was harmed in the making a pool table, said the creator. “In fact, we saved the vehicle for posterity.”

Many cities want to show off their tourist credentials by driving tour operators around well-maintained, scenic routes and even make a video to lure travellers. But sometimes it pays to take a somewhat different line, as the Californian city of San Francisco did in 2012. San Francisco’s hilly streets became a global image for the Pacific coast city after the 1968 Hollywood blockbuster movie Bullitt. The star Steve McQueen, driving a fastback Ford Mustang, pursued at breakneck speed the villain, who was d

Canadian love their ice fishing, but sometimes it gets just a little chilly out there on a windswept lake, especially when it is already -20C with no wind-chill factored in. Some people have tents and some have small portable protective huts big enough for one person. But there is a better way to head out across a frozen lake, as this do-it-yourself ice fisherman shows.

Governments, police forces and parent groups have use various messages to warn the public about dangerous driving and some have been more effective than others.

Two recent examples – one from New Zealand and one from Australia – make their point in different ways. The New Zealand video - ‘don’t use a mobile phone while driving’ – gets the message across with gentle humour.

The Australian video – ‘don’t drink and drive’ – employs intense drama to ensure a mark is left on the viewer.
