Bulgarian project progressing well

Work on the new Trakiya Highway in Bulgaria is on track, with some 70km already open to traffic. When it is complete, the new highway will link Karnobat and Burgas on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The final section of the Trakiya Highway, Lot 4, is due for completion in February 2013 and opening this stretch will allow the entire route to be used, reducing travel times between capital Sofia and Burgas.

Carlisle, in north-west England, has seen as 20% reduction in congestion since the opening of the city’s US$284million (£176m) Northern Development Route in February this year. Around 10,000 vehicles a day are using the new road, which is broadly in line with the predictions made by highways engineers when building a case to construct a new route connecting the A595 with the M6 around the western flank of the city. Traffic counters positioned on the new road show an average of 9,583 vehicles a day along the

The tunnel option has been proposed largely due to environmental reasons. The route of the highway takes it through the area of the Kresna Gorge but on both environmental and technical grounds, building the road on the surface is out of the question and the best solution is to construct a
