Brazil’s safer roads as casualties fall

Brazil has seen an improvement in road safety during the first eight months of 2018. There were 18% fewer casualties from road crashes in the first eight months of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017. The insurance company, Seguradora Lider, said that it paid compensation claims for 216,023 incidents in the first eight months of 2018, against 263,841 for the same period in 2017. Brazil has seen an improvement in road safety during the first eight months of 2018. There were 18% fewer casualties from road crashes in the first eight months of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017. The insurance company, Seguradora Lider, said that it paid compensation claims for 216,023 incidents in the first eight months of 2018, against 263,841 for the same period in 2017. The number of compensation payments for road traffic deaths fell by 6% to 26,032 for the first eight months of 2018 compared to 2017. Meanwhile the number of compensation payments for serious injuries dropped 25% to 143,363.

    Latest statistics show road fatalities fell in the European Union by 11% in 2010 compared with the previous year. Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Luxembourg, Sweden, France and Slovenia have all made reductions of more than 50% in the number of deaths on their roads since 2001, says the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).     Vietnam has seen a drop in road traffic crashes in the period from January-April 2016 compared with the same period in 2015. According to Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee, the number of road crashes fell by 12.6% to 6,620 during this period. Collisions accounted for 3,190 of Vietnam’s road crashes, which resulted in 1,945 serious injuries and caused 2,790 fatalities during the January-April 2016 period.
