Brazilian mining firm invests in Mozambique infrastructure

The road network of Mozambique is set to benefit from a major investment from a Brazilian mining company.

The road network of Mozambique is set to benefit from a major investment from a Brazilian mining company. The firm, Vale, will spend US$691 million on the Nacala Corridor road project during 2012. This will provide a key link to the Moatize II coal mining project, on which it is spending a further $499 million. In all Vale has planned total investments of $4.44 billion on the Nacala Corridor and $2.07 billion on the Moatize II mining project.

    An investment of nearly US$510 million is being planned in Bolivia for road building works. The country’s state-run road company, Administradora Boliviana de Carreteras (ABC), has plans in hand for a total of 32 road maintenance and construction projects in Santa Cruz department. In all these will stretch for some 5,773km. Of this, $291 million will be spent on 276km of new roads, including the Saavedra-Chane and Circunvalacion Mineros, Hardeman-Colonia Pairi and Rio Uruguaito-Santa Rosa de la Roca-San Igna

    State-owned Indonesian toll road firm Jasa Marga plans to increase its network by 460km by 2018. This will bring its total network to 1,050km by 2018. During 2016, Jasa Marga intends to spend US1 billion developing its toll road network and general operations. By 2018, the Trans Java toll road should be open to traffic.

    Cautious mining customers holding back from investing in equipment is said by Atlas Copco to be a key reason behind an ‘organic’ decline of 11% in the value of its product and service orders and 5% ‘organic’ drop in revenues compared to the same three months of last year. The firm’s orders received value decreased to €2.45 billion (SEK 21,008mn) in Q1 2013 from €2.89 billion (SEK 24,827mn) in Q1 2012. Atlas Copco revenues were €2.36 billion (SEK 20,227mn) in the first three months of 2013, compared to €2.59
