Brazil’s anti-corruption drive continues, with the country’s Federal Police now carrying out investigations into a series of road projects across the country. So far the investigations have seen police action being taken in four states across the country, including search and seizure operations. The investigations are focussing on issues such as whether bribes have been paid to secure contracts or whether fraud surrounds a number of loans. Concern that funds intended for road maintenance, repairs or construction have been misappropriated have prompted the police action and the need for further investigations has not been ruled out.

    Brazil's national department of transport infrastructure, Dnit, has approved a proposal to suspend work on 29 road projects across 12 states. The approval comes after severe budget cuts this year and the number of affected works could increase to 61. Dnit noted, however, that no work will be immediately stopped and that current contracts will be maintained.     The investigation into the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in the Italian city of Genoa is continuing. The failure of the bridge in August 2018 resulted in 43 fatalities.
