A new biomass-fuel conversion facility is being established in the US state of Hawaii. This plant will be intended to highlight the efficiency of biomass-fuel conversion processes as well as the efficiency of new energy solutions. The facility is also intended to prove that efficient and reliable secondary processes such as storage and transportation can be handled effectively in a true production environment. The facility will allow researchers to investigate issues such as the problems caused by irregularly shaped raw materials for use in biomass processes will place on plant design and specification for example.

There are important methods aimed at the reuse and recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) a number of problems have to be solved however, mainly concerning the elimination of moisture content and how best to heat the RAP without damaging the binder. When RAP is used in percentages of up to 30-40% of the final mix, heating can be carried out through direct contact with hot aggregates. On the other hand, in order to use higher RAP percentages, up to 100%, the plant has to be fitted with a specific h

The use of specialist equipment to produce hydraulically bound mixtures can save 30-40% on the cost of landfill and backfill it is claimed. The transportation and removal of old material from certain highway projects has long been a problem for contractors. But David MacLynn believes that the answer, in many instances, could lie in the use of hydraulically bound mixtures (HBM), which he says can save between 30-40% on the cost of landfill and backfill.
