1397 AECOM, Arcadis-2782 WSP/PB, 2874 CH2M-Fairhurst and 8100 Highways England are among the finalists for this year’s Bentley awards for outstanding use of BIM – building information modelling.

4019 Bentley Systems, a provider of infrastructure software solutions, said that the winners will be announced at The Year in Infrastructure 2017 Conference to be held in Singapore this year, October 10-12.

“The annual awards honour the extraordinary work of Bentley users advancing infrastructure design, construction, and operations throughout the world,” the company said.

Ten independent jury panels of industry experts selected the 51 finalists from more than 400 nominations submitted by organisations in more than 50 countries.

Finalists will present their innovative projects to their peers, the jurors, industry thought leaders and more than 120 members of the media as part of related infrastructure forums at the conference to take place at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The structural design of Marina Bay Sands was done by 1419 Arup and was Bentley’s 2010 Be Inspired Award winner for Innovation in Structural Engineering.

In 2014, the Advancing Comprehensive BIM award was taken by engineering design firm 2418 HDR for its Tappan Zee Hudson River Crossing, the New NY Bridge in the US. It was renamed this summer the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, of which the first span will open to westbound traffic later this month.
The original bridge is in Westchester across the Hudson River at one of its widest points. But the 27m-wide cantilever structure is pushing 60 years old, well past its 50-year expectancy and carrying around 138,000 vehicles daily.

In 2013, the New York State Thruway Authority and Tappan Zee Constructors started the US$3.9 billion eight-lane bridge, a double-span design of four lanes per span in opposite directions. It’s also designed to take a rapid transit rail line between the two road decks in future without major reinforcing or widening.

A successful explosive demolition has been carried out of the Hurricane Deck Bridge in the US state of Missouri. The Hurricane Deck Bridge carried Missouri Route 5 over Lake of the Ozarks and measured 695m long. The structure was no longer able to cope with the traffic volumes it was carrying and the Missouri Department of Transport (MODOT) opted to build a new delta frame bridge to replace it. Work started on the new bridge in 2012 and this was opened to traffic in September 2013. The steel span Hurricane

    February 27, 2017
Early detection of pavement defects and the causes of deterioration is essential for effective maintenance planning, writes Dr Alena Uus* There is a need for optimisation and development of UK highway survey methods that would provide comprehensive information on the surface and subsurface pavement condition and operate at traffic speed, which eliminates the requirement for lane closures. Performance of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods commonly employed in pavement condition surveys can be potent
