Tunnel workers have now connected the two bores for the new highway linking Albania with Kosovo. The 5.6km tunnel forms part of the Rreshen-Kalimash highway, which has so far cost Albania in excess of €1 billion.
A preliminary study on the proposed tunnel connecting the islands of Malta and Gozo has been carried out by Mott Macdonald. Mott Macdonald’s preliminary analysis of the Malta-Gozo undersea road link suggests that it would take 5-7 years to build a tunnel between the two islands. This report suggests a cost of €156-€492 million for a single bore three-lane tunnel on the shortest practical alignment route. Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon has inaugurated the new Baluarte Bridge, which crosses the Baluarte River in the Sierra Madre mountain range in the north of the country. This 1.12km long bridge is 403m high at its central point over the steeply sloping ravine it spans, making it the highest cable-stayed structure in the world.
