Tunnel workers have now connected the two bores for the new highway linking Albania with Kosovo. The 5.6km tunnel forms part of the Rreshen-Kalimash highway, which has so far cost Albania in excess of €1 billion.
Serbia has around €5.5 billion worth of transport infrastructure projects either in progress or in preparation, according to the government. Of the €5.5 billion of contracts, around €3 billion is for roads under construction.
Minister of infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlovic, said that around 90km or motorway will be completed this year and another 200km will be rehabilitated. Among these projects is construction of the Nis-Merdare motorway. In the past two years around 170km of motorways were built.

The US state of Virginia has approved a US$4 billion project to expand the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel close to the city of Norfolk.
The state has been looking at designs for the past 20 years to improve traffic flow in the area, according to a report in the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. Hampton Roads is a body of water making up one of the world's largest natural harbours. The existing structure is close to the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet home base at Norfolk.
New highway links between Montenegro and Bosnia will make major improvements in transport links for the two countries. Construction work has started on Albania’s latest highway project, which will connect the capital Tirana with the city of Elbasan in the centre of the country. Construction work on a 32km stretch of the highway, including a 4.3km tunnel, is being carried out by Greek contractor Aktor.
