Financing worth $211.5 million is being provided to the Connecting Madagascar for Inclusive Growth Project (PCMCI). The key focus will be for improvements to important bridge links in Madagascar. The funding package is being delivered by the International Development Association (IDA).
Amongst the bridges being improved will be the Manambery Bridge on the RN5a route, and the Mahavavy Bridge and Ifasy Bridge on the RN6 route. Repairs, maintenance and improvement works will be carried out to ensure the bridges can better cope with the traffic volumes they carry at present. The bridges will also be secured structurally to cope with the anticipated issues caused by climate change.
The climate-resilient bridge infrastructure will boost connectivity to remote areas. The financing forms part of the Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERC). Repairs commenced in April 2024 to repair sections of the RN4 and RN6 routes as well as the Port of Mahajanga.
