A budget of nearly $155 million will be used to improve roads in Johannesburg, South Africa. The budget is being provided over a three year period by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

However, Johannesburg’s infrastructure backlog is estimated at a colossal $15.25 billion, due largely to a combination of its crumbling roads, inadequate electricity grid and restricted water supply. This new tranche of funding will make improvements but will not address the city’s desperate need for upgrade work.

Construction works planned include bridge upgrades for Roodepoort, Lenasia and Soweto. Improvements will be made to stormwater systems in Orange Farm, Ivory Park, Braamfischerville, Protea Glen and Kliptown to protect roads or properties from flooding. New traffic signals will be installed in major routes running through Soweto, Roodepoort, Sandton and Randburg. A road resurfacing programme will be carried out that will also include patching and pothole repairs.
