Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport of Ethiopia and in the premises of the African Union, this international conference and Road Safety Challenge aims at encouraging concrete, measurable implementation of the Decade of Action Plan. It will be held on March 11th and 12th in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.

Each year nearly 1.3 million people die as a result of a road traffic collision - more than 3,000 deaths each day. Of these, 91% of road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people for people aged 15-29 years. But road traffic injuries can be prevented. For that to be achieved, immediate and concrete action is needed.

And 2015 will be a crucial year for road safety. This is the mid-term review of the 3262 United Nations 3439 Decade of Action for road safety (2011-2020) and its time for a first assessment on what has been achieved, looking closely at the results. With this initiative, 1201 IRF Geneva wishes to keep Road Safety high in the agenda, encourage concrete, measurable implementation, and launch a debate on the issue of data and the importance of monitoring and evaluation. Good quality data is essential as it provides the foundation for any targeted road safety approach.

IRF is going to acknowledge and present an award – during this international conference – to the country in the African region which performs best in delivering on the Decade of Action Plan. Countries participating in the challenge will be assessed on the basis of a detailed questionnaire – covering the five pillars of the plan of action – specifically developed by IRF for this challenge.
