There is no doubt that the forthcoming 2462 IRF World Meeting in Lisbon will be the single most important road industry gathering of the year.

Anyone who is anybody in the road sector will be present and many leading international companies are choosing this landmark occasion to showcase their products, brand and expertise to a highly prominent global audience.

Virtually unprecedented mobilisation within the profession around the World Meeting has enabled the Steering Committee to attract key decision makers from around the world. Thanks to their inputs and participation, a highly topical and dynamic programme has been developed that fully meets the aspirations and expectations of industry stakeholders; and which offers the guarantee of an unmissable occasion.

By way of added prestige, the event is being convened under the High Patronage of H.E. The President of the Republic of Portugal and benefits from the full and active support of the country's government; extended notably through its Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications as well as other officials sensitive to road issues, particularly as they relate to sustainable development Top quality presentations by a distinguished panel of international speakers will be complemented by an exciting social and cultural programme, giving delegates and their guests ample opportunity to take full advantage of their stay in the beautiful and highly conducive surroundings of Lisbon, with its world famous monuments and cultural landmarks as well as magnificent gardens, coastal vistas and vintage vineyards.

Among numerous highlights, a special gala dinner to be held on 27 May at the historic Convento de Beato, which dates back to the 15th Century, promises to be particularly unforgettable experience, seeped in Portuguese culture and history. Once again, places are being reserved fast so you are encouraged to register forthwith, before it is too late!

Given such a rich heritage, Lisbon, the starting point of so many of the great voyages of discovery that have opened up our modern world, provides a particularly apt venue to address challenges that will shape the communications and transport networks of the 21st century.

The World Meeting presents an outstanding opportunity for ensuring a new era of progress, in harmony with the fresh economic, social and environmental challenges of our times.

It will feature authoritative, high-level exchanges on key issues in the domains of mobility, transport, infrastructure, road safety, security and sustainability. The diversity of its programme and participation further constitutes a unique forum for exploring themes of the utmost importance and topicality for the future of our industry, including the latest cutting-edge techniques and technologies, as well as innovative road financing and management mechanisms.

A comprehensive series of parallel workshops will complement the main sessions in order to enable more detailed specialist debate around core topics. There will also be a special session, devoted to the continuous education of road managers and supervisors in the public and private sectors, which will be jointly hosted by IRF and the World Road Association (3141 PIARC).

In short, to borrow the words of Conference Chairman, Emanuel Maranha das Neves, the IRF World Meeting "will be the starting point of a new voyage of discovery from Lisbon - towards shared roads for the future wellbeing and prosperity of our planet."
