The eighth edition of Excon, South Asia’s largest construction equipment and technology fair, took place at Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre from 25-29th November 2015 at Karnataka in South India. The event featured over 850 exhibitors, including 275 from overseas. Buoyed by the Indian government’s ambitious plan to develop a 50,000km road network during next five years, road construction equipment manufacturers proved a strong focus at the event.
6791 Ammann Apollo India showed its ABA-180, a 180tonne/hour, Unibatch asphalt batching plant complete with batching tower, control cabin, thermo drum unit and bag house filter. The plant has been assembled at Apollo’s manufacturing facility at Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Western India. Ammann had entered into a joint venture tie-up with Indian road construction equipment major Apollo in 2013 to manufacture asphalt batching plants, tandem rollers, walk behind rollers and pavers.
Sunil Sapru, chief executive marketing at Ammann Apollo India said, “We are now positioned to offer our entire range, based on advanced technology from Ammann, for the Indian road construction sector. The plants are price competitive, yet feature advanced engineering suiting the Indian worksite conditions. While most of the parts of our batching plants are locally sourced, the thermo drums and thermo shields and burner are being imported.”
Sapru said, “Design improvisations have been made in our batching plants for ease of mobilisation and installation for national expressways, state highways, and road projects taking place at hilly regions in India.”
Gujarat-based Indian road construction equipment manufacturer Kaushik Engineering Works showed its 120tonne/hour asphalt batch mix plant, complete with mixing tower, drying drum and electrical control panel system at the event. The plant has been manufactured under its joint venture with Turkish firm Çesan. Saumil Shah, director, Kaushik Engineering Works said, “The demand of asphalt batch mix plants is rising in India. We will be having seven asphalt batch mix plants running by end of 2015, made under our collaboration with Çesan. We are looking to strengthen our presence in the domestic and also Latin American and Eastern European markets. Presently, our products are being exported to South Asian, African and Middle East [markets].
Linhoff India showed its Jet Patcher pothole repair machine, imported from New Zealand, and Road Saver-2, micro surfacing machine from Renmach US at the show. Linhoff India opened a new plant at Pune in Western India in 2014 for assembling its asphalt batch mix plants. “We have a wide portfolio of asphalt plants For the Indian road construction sector, we are manufacturing 80-200tonne/hour plants. However, depending on Indian market requirements, we may also take up production of bigger 240tonne/hour plants. The smaller capacity plants find usage for road construction projects in the North Eastern part of India and other hilly areas.”
Making its maiden participation at Excon,717 Leeboy India displayed its 679 and 699 backhoe loaders, and 785 xl-2 and 985 graders. These machines are made at the firm’s new Bengaluru plant. New products on display also included a truck mounted pothole patcher, on a Bharat Benz chassis. Amarnath Ramachandran, president, Leeboy India said, “We have booked orders for thirty motor graders during the event. We are bullish on new bookings as projects firms up.” LeeBoy also displayed its new LBC-24W concrete kerb and gutter machine. He explained that the machine is designed for slipforming kerbs and gutters, alley ribbons and narrow sidewalks, while delivering high productivity, speed and quality.
Sharing details on the new generation Crossover tunnel boring machines at Excon, Kapil Bhati, managing director, Robbins Tunnelling and Trenchless Technology India, said, “ There are numerous and severe geological challenges in India, mainly in the Himalayan region, where large numbers of road tunnelling projects are coming up. These are high water pressure, soft ground and altogether earth pressure. All these could damage the TBM unit while functioning. Our new Crossover tunnel boring machines can function through probe drilling by checking the deterrents present on way of boring.”
It was of note that several manufacturers introduced new model graders to the Indian market at Excon.7101 Schwing Stetter India displayed the (2490 XCMG-built) GR 150 grader while 1170 Sany India showed its SAG 160-5 and SAG 120-3 graders. Meanwhile Indian construction equipment distributor Dozco exhibited the 230 Hidromek MG 330 grader.
